On a recent trip to Iceland, I became enamored with puffins. After all, who doesn’t love a puffin?! They are absolutely adorable, with engaging antics and clown-like colorful bills, and they are incredibly tame, allowing curious humans to approach within a few feet. I wanted to show how the puffins interact with each other, and used poses for each bird to create a circular composition that keeps the eye within the painting. I also wanted to show what it is like to watch the puffins when they are on the edge of their cliff, ready to launch out into the air at any moment. They nest in burrows along the cliffside, and forage at sea, carrying mouthfuls of small fish back to their young within the burrows.
